Arvixe is one of many spider web hosting brands owned by Endurance International Grouping, and like its siblings HostGator and Bluehost, information technology won’t exist making our best spider web hosting guide any time soon. That said, fifty-fifty if it was an independent offer it wouldn’t make information technology. The infuriating setup and dated website left us wondering if the service still operated.
In this Arvixe review, nosotros’ll talk about our mostly negative experience when we tried the service. So much effort was involved in getting our website working that there was little room for anything else. Still, nosotros’ll talk about the features, speed, usability and security of the service, fifty-fifty if they’re overshadowed by the setup.
Fifty-fifty without that, it’s difficult to recommend Arvixe. The prices are high, the packages aren’t attractive and the usability is, frankly, bad. It’s a mediocre provider in every regard, with a particularly poor functioning when it comes to configuration.
Strengths & Weaknesses
- Decent features
- Impressive speed
- Many hosting types
- Prompt back up
- Windows & Linux hosting bachelor
- Dated website
- Broken setup process
- No managed WordPress hosting
Alternatives for Arvixe
Arvixe doesn’t have many features exterior of what’south included in a normal cPanel implementation (read our all-time web hosting with cPanel guide). That said, the goodies included aren’t bad, and though nosotros wanted to see more for security, the overall characteristic prepare satisfies.
Though boilerplate in nearly every regard, Arvixe has ane uncommon characteristic. Outside of A2 Hosting, it’s 1 of the few web hosts that offer Linux and Windows servers, meaning you can cull the operating system that best fits the website you’re building. Windows plans are more expensive, as they usually are, but we like to see the option regardless.
Otherwise, information technology’due south the standard fare. You get the Softaculous app installer, which holds scripts for WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and more, also as $200 in ad credits spread beyond Bing and Google.
You lot also get a website builder, which is increasingly mutual. Equally with most web hosts, the architect provided past Arvixe will get you by, but you lot’re amend off with one of our best website builders. We recommend Wix (read our Wix review).
Something to annotation is that when we tried to launch the website architect, we were met with a alert folio from Google that our connection may non exist secure.
What’due south lacking are the security features. Though Arvixe’s security is audio overall, many of the free security features at other web hosts are paid here. For example, standard shared hosting doesn’t come with a complimentary SSL/TLS document.
Arvixe Features Overview
Web Application Firewall
Phone Back up
Live Chat Support
Arvixe is 1 of the more expensive hosts out there, with multi-year rates above some providers’ monthly rates. The dated look of the website doesn’t help much, either, and makes information technology difficult to know what you’re buying. That’southward more of a concern for the adjacent department, merely user-friendliness nevertheless comes upward hither.
On the website, you’ll come across the price advertised “as low every bit.” That translates to the monthly rate you lot’ll exist paying if yous buy two years upfront, which we’ve reflected in the table in a higher place. Arvixe offers plans in durations of ane, 3 and six months, likewise equally one and two years, with 6 months and above receiving discounts.
The discount is horrible, though. Bluehost, which is another starchild from Endurance International Group, starts at effectually $4 per month on multi-year plans and renews at only $8 a month (read our Bluehost review). Arvixe starts high at $7 a month for multi-year plans and renews at around $10 per month.
No thing how you slice information technology, Arvixe is expensive. More abrasive than the high price tag is the strange distribution of prices. For example, Business plans kickoff at $25 per month, but there’s a “pro” version available for $38 a month. The merely difference between them is that “pro” plans offer unlimited domains while standard Business concern only offers six. The same goes for Personal.
That’s not how spider web hosting is sold anymore. Accept Hostinger, for example. Information technology offers three tiers of shared hosting, and like Arvixe, at that place’south a limit on the number of domains you tin host on the cheapest programme. That said, the more expensive plans come with actress processing power, features such every bit daily backups and a college bandwidth limit (read our Hostinger review).
Arvixe’southward division betwixt pro and non-pro versions doesn’t brand sense, and the massive price hike between the ii means you lot’ll finish up paying a lot more than if you lot need more than six domains.
Thankfully, there’s a decent money-back guarantee. Arvixe gives yous 45 days to modify your mind, which, though not as generous as InMotion Hosting’s 90-solar day window, isn’t bad (read our InMotion Hosting review).
Ease of Use
Arvixe’s site is dated, and though an ugly confront doesn’t inherently make for poor usability, information technology does in this case. There’s an overwhelming amount of information on product pages, nailing down prices for the types of hosting is disruptive and much of the information on product pages isn’t relevant for many users.
Streamlining the process would help, but, thankfully, the worries end for a moment during checkout. Information technology’s almost a carbon re-create of Hostgator’due south checkout folio, which isn’t surprising because they’re both endemic by the aforementioned company. In that location are add-ons that can be confusing, though.
There’s also a lot of confusion near the price you’re paying. The most inexpensive shared program costs $168 for two years at the time of writing. At the bottom, it says the plan will renew at $168 two years from the engagement you lot sign up, merely information technology likewise says “introductory prices utilise to the kickoff term.” That’south the introductory price, so what gives?
The bug don’t end at that place. After signing up, nosotros couldn’t log in. The password we set didn’t piece of work, and after requesting a password reset, we were sent an email asking that we verify our identity, which, in this example, meant uploading a full color, photograph ID. We’ve reviewed a lot of web hosting providers and not in one case have we seen a verification process like that.
Responding to the e-mail didn’t work, despite that beingness what we were told to do. Finally, we reached out to support to enquire about information technology, which required us to upload the document once again. Subsequently that whole fiasco, nosotros could log in.
We couldn’t do anything with our hosting, though. As if dealing with verification wasn’t enough, our business relationship was “pending,” with no explanation equally to what that meant. Again, we needed back up, and this time information technology took ii rounds considering the support amanuensis didn’t fully activate our account the first time.
Once we logged in, we couldn’t access cPanel. In the customer expanse, which is actually good, the link to log in to cPanel just redirected dorsum to the customer area. We reached out to support for a tertiary time, once once again waiting for five to 10 minutes while the rep pulled upwards our account information.
The usability beyond sign-upwards isn’t bad. Arvixe’s account dashboard displays the near important information, including bandwidth and disk usage, in an like shooting fish in a barrel-to-read format, along with quick links to important cPanel items. Plus, it shows your billing information, including when the side by side payment is due and how much information technology’ll cost.
There’s nothing to notation in cPanel other than the fact that information technology’s cPanel. It’due south almost every bit stock a build every bit you can get, which isn’t a bad thing, merely it’s goose egg special, either. If yous want to see what a terrible control console looks like, read our i&1 Web Hosting review.
That said, whatsoever footing Arvixe gains in the control panel is overshadowed by the horrendous setup procedure. Nosotros presume that what we went through isn’t the process for everyone, but it happened to us, and that’s generally a expert sign that it has happened before. The infuriating setup made united states want to close the book on a story that was just beginning, and that’s never expert.
Arvixe offers shared, VPS, defended and cloud hosting. The lineup is more than complex than that, with a split between two types of shared hosting, merely information technology basically boils downward to that. Unfortunately, managed WordPress isn’t offered, then read our best web hosting for WordPress guide if you’re interested in that.
Our Kinsta review may be helpful, too, considering there’due south little ability outside of shared hosting for WordPress. Arvixe splits its shared hosting into Personal and Business classes, each of which come in ii tiers with Linux or Windows, much like A2 Hosting (read our A2 Hosting review).
As mentioned, the simply difference betwixt the two tiers is the number of domains you can host. Otherwise, they’re the same. That said, we like that you can cull between Windows and Linux.
There’s reseller hosting, too, but it’s simply a shared package that y’all can, well, resell. The prices aren’t the worst, but we like SiteGround’due south credit-based approach to reseller hosting much more than (read our SiteGround review).
VPS plans, which provide dedicated resource on a shared server, are offered, merely we don’t recommend them. The price is much higher than the contest’due south and the specs are mediocre. Developers won’t be able to save money, either, with Arvixe only offering managed VPS plans.
Defended and cloud hosting are bachelor, as well, and nosotros’re just lotting them together because Arvixe does. Under the “DedicatedClass” tab, you lot’ll notice dedicated and cloud servers, with the latter seeming like it was shoehorned in at some point. The specs aren’t terrible, only the cost is high, then it’s best to look elsewhere. Our Pagely review is a proficient place to start.
The lineup isn’t bad, but the prices are high beyond the board. The major types of hosting are represented, and with a lot of flexibility thanks to the choice in OS. Even so, the loftier price and lack of managed WordPress makes the lineup await less than desirable.
Speed & Uptime
Speed is ane of the first areas nosotros judge with a web host. It’s easy to become upwards and running, provides a solid base on which the rest of the service can be based and, unlike most areas, is objective.
That said, it was the last matter we could text for Arvixe. Our website took over four days to get online thanks to the multiple times nosotros had to achieve out to support. Part of the the trouble was the nameservers. DNS propagation — which is better explained in our what are DNS records guide — shouldn’t take more than 24 hours, but it was over three days before we saw anything.
That was considering, despite immigration payment and reaching out to back up two times to confirm our account had been activated, our website was never set up on the server. We spent well-nigh a full piece of work week trying to get the service working and confirming that information technology should be, only to be told that our coin was taken but the service wasn’t active.
One time we got the website working, nosotros tested speed using Pingdom Speed Test and Load Impact. Initially, Pingdom Speed Test returned a perfect score, with a load fourth dimension of effectually 200 milliseconds and a 100 out of 100. It turned out that wasn’t a true representation of the website, though.
Nosotros ran the examination using a bare version of WordPress, but for whatever reason, WordPress wasn’t installed in the root of the website. That means when visiting our test domain, you’d be met with an index of the website instead of WordPress. Why WordPress installed like that is beyond us.
We got more than reasonable results when nosotros reran the test, with Arvixe scoring a 90 out of 100. That said, most of our expect time came from the hosting, not DNS requests or SSL handshakes. Because of that, our results suggest that Arvixe could exist faster.
That’s backed by our Load Bear on testing. We sent 50 virtual users to the website over five minutes, and though Arvixe was solid at first, it received a greater than average number of HTTP errors every bit the user load increased, suggesting the resources of the server were being pushed to their limit.
As for uptime, there’s a 99.9 percent uptime guarantee that will provide you lot one calendar month of service if your website falls below that threshold. Considering we had 4 days of no service, that would fall under the guarantee, but when we reached out to support, at that place was no mention of a credit. Don’t concord your breath.
Of the many flaws Arvixe has, security isn’t among them. All plans come up with an impressive range of security features, which seems like something that carried over from Arvixe’s glory days.
Your server is protected with brute force assault detection, a firewall, redundant power carriers, constant network monitoring and nightly security updates.
That said, what looked attractive a few years dorsum has lost its luster. For example, Arvixe offers distributed denial-of-service attack response. It’s response, non protection, meaning information technology tin mitigate a DDoS attack once it has started, but it doesn’t accept proactive measures to proceed them from occurring.
Another instance comes with SSL/TLS certificates. A few years dorsum, SSL certificates were almost exclusively paid, but most spider web hosts include a low-level certificate for gratis now. DreamHost and InMotion Hosting are among those that do, but even Arvixe’southward partners Bluehost and HostGator include one.
At that place are no automatic backups, either, which is important, particularly for WordPress. Read our guide on manually backing up your website so you don’t lose your work.
That said, there’southward a blink of mod conveniences with things such as gratuitous Cloudflare integration. The security is solid, merely some of the goodies that other hosts include for free will cost y’all at Arvixe.
The just glaring omission is malware removal. Though a paid service almost everywhere, Arvixe doesn’t even provide a way to scan your website. Given that SiteLock is part of Endurance International Grouping similar Arvixe, information technology would be nice to run into deeper integration with that platform.
Allow’s start with domain privacy. When yous annals a domain, y’all too register a lot of personal data, which is known as a WHOIS record. Those records are online, meaning your proper noun, accost, telephone number and more are publicly searchable and can exist tied back to the domain you own.
Domain privacy gets around that by replacing your information with the registrar’s, and like DreamHost, Arvixe used to offer it for free (read our DreamHost review). An entry in Arvixe’s knowledgebase created in 2009 talks virtually complimentary domain privacy, just information technology was edited in 2015 to reflect that the service no longer offers it.
That doesn’t come up as much of a surprise, though. Endurance Insurance Group acquired Arvixe in late 2014, suggesting the change in domain privacy came from the powers that be. It now runs $10 per yr for a single domain, which, though not expensive, is clearly a cash grab from to a higher place.
There’south a lot of internal sharing, also. Endurance International Group is a massive company, with multiple web hosts and domain registrars defenseless in its web. There are peripheral products, too, including SiteLock and MOJO Marketplace.
The only business organisation hither is selling more products, not protecting your privacy. The domain privacy alter is a clear demonstration of that.
Back up is decent, but nothing special. Much like other Endurance International Group brands, the support staff is helpful, if pushy and impersonable. Fifty-fifty and then, you lot can find answers to the questions you have promptly.
You can contact Arvixe over alive chat or email, but it isn’t clear when that support is bachelor. On the “contact us” page, information technology says back up is available 24/7, but the departments that bargain with billing, migrations and corruption are non. Specially for the kickoff 2, we’d categorize those as full general support, so clarification is needed.
Exterior of the directly contact, there’south a knowledgebase, which you tin can admission past clicking the “support heart” button anywhere on Arvixe’s website. Annoyingly, the knowledgebase opens a carve up subdomain with no option to navigate back to the homepage.
The knowledgebase isn’t bad, but the dated navigation makes it more than difficult to get effectually than it is with other offerings. All the same, the issue is mitigated by articulate categories and a search bar. Unfortunately, you lot won’t find much help. Though there are a lot of articles in the knowledgebase, a lack of particular and visual references makes them difficult to follow.
Next to the “back up heart” button is the “give-and-take board” button, which we causeless led to a forum. It didn’t. Rather, the give-and-take lath is something of a bulletin board that details the condition of servers and upcoming maintenance.
Overall, support isn’t bad, but other hosts provide more than oomph. It feels like Arvixe put in the bare minimum when it comes to creating support resource, and though that means you can detect answers, it isn’t the most pleasant feel.
Arvixe isn’t impressive, only information technology’s not bad, either. The speed is decent, even if existent-world use may cause bug, and the security features aren’t terrible.
That said, our experience setting up our website can’t exist ignored, and because it happened to us, we can’t imagine we’re the starting time. The usability is horrendous, which wouldn’t be an issue if it wasn’t for our website never being added to the server.
Overall, Arvixe is expensive and not worth the toll, even when our experience isn’t factored in. You lot’ll exist better off reading our other spider web hosting reviews.
What exercise you recall of Arvixe? Was our experience an outlier? Let u.s. know in the comments below and, every bit e’er, thanks for reading.
